Ideas for our Local Unemployment event(s)

Please share your ideas for specific speakers on the topic of Local Unemployment and specific ideas you have regarding the format (e.g. three speakers for 20 minutes each followed by an hour of Q&A). You should be able to simply click on the word "comments" below this post in order to enter the conversation.

I will compile the comments and they will provide a starting point for our next meeting.

  1. I actually was the one who said 60% of employees are employed by small businesses (those with less than 500 employees). It is not quite that much. It is more like 51% according to the US Census bureau. But in any case, I think it is important that we consider small businesses when we think about unemployment. There are ways in which communities have helped existing businesses and helped start new businesses. They are called business incubators or micro lenders. My wife (Michele Weber, Ph.D.) has consulted for international development organizations (like World Visions and Habitat for Humanity) and is working to establish such a center in Oakdale. Fresno has a non-profit called the Central Valley Business Incubator. Michele would be glad to be a part of the panel or we could have someone from the Fresno center.
